|Spring Crew: Spring is the primary competitive season for rowing, and we will have winter conditioning prior to water training. Rowing is a challenging but highly rewarding sport, demanding endurance, strength, and skill along with consummate teamwork and mental toughness. Rowers are among the toughest, most determined athletes you will meet.|
Cost: $1,250, but divided into two portions – dues $750 and a fundraising commitment of $500. This cost includes the use of equipment, regatta entry fees, and the hospitality tent at races (food for athletes and families). You will also be responsible for uniform costs ($150), an individual US Rowing membership (approx. $10/year), entry fee for Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints ($35), the cost for Washington College rowing tank clinic ($15), and donations to supplement the hospitality tent at regattas. REMEMBER – rowing at Stone Bridge High School is a club sport that does not receive any funding from the high school or the Loudoun County school system. Stone Bridge Rowing Club is a self-funded, 501(c)3 non-profit organization governed by a board of parent volunteers.
Participation: The program is open to Stone Bridge High School students. Students must have basic swimming skills as a prerequisite to participate in on-water activities. A swim test will be held prior to the water practices to confirm this. In addition, we will require a current VHSL (Virginia High School League) physical form confirming physician release to participate (completed after May 1, 2019). Physical forms are available on VHSL.org or on the stonebridgerowingclub.org website. Stone Bridge Rowing must have their own copy of your VHSL physical form. If the school has your form, you will need to get a copy of our application process. After applications are complete, Stone Bridge Rowing will provide a copy of your paperwork to the Stone Bridge Athletic Department. It is the expectation of the SBHS Athletic Department that athletes make a commitment to a team when they tryout. Vacations by athletic team members during their sport season are discouraged. Athletes are required to attend all practices/races unless prior approval has been given by the head Coach.
Winter Conditioning: 3 days per week (2 days at the gym and 1 day at school). In order to prepare the athletes for the racing season, winter conditioning sessions will be held twice a week after school from December through February at TruStrength in Ashburn, located at 42910 Winkle Dr. Unit #105 Ashburn, Va. In addition to SBRC and LCPS registration forms, a special membership application and program payment are required to participate in the workouts at this location. The athletes will also practice on ergometers in the SBHS Cafeteria once a week on Tuesdays from 4:30-7:00 pm. Athletes are also expected to work out on their own on days they are not conditioning with the team, but it doesn’t need to be at the gym.
Rowing Location: The program will be administered in the Spring on the Potomac River at Algonkian Regional Park located at 47001 Fairway Dr, Sterling VA 20165. After entering the park grounds, follow signs to the boat ramp. Athlete parking/drop off is on the gravel parking lot next to the sports field. Please do not park in the paved boat ramp parking lot. Athletes access the site by a walking path (approx. 5 min walk from the parking lot).
Schedule: Try-outs will be held in mid-February 2020 (date TBD) at SBHS Cafeteria using ergometers. Try-outs are used to determine which students will go in which boats. We hope to be able to accommodate all interested students; however, there is always the possibility that numbers may need to be limited based on equipment and coach/student safety ratios. If that becomes necessary, the tryout day will be used to determine the team roster as well. Spring training for those on the team is expected to begin in late February and will be held after school Monday through Thursday plus Saturdays until March 16. Practices during Spring Break are expected to be twice a day from Monday-Wednesday. Spring “sprint” races are ~1 mile. Our unconfirmed Spring schedule has approximately 5 events on weekends from late-January through the end of April, plus possible championship races in May.
Forms: Athletes must complete and return ALL required forms prior to participation with the team. New athletes must also pass a swim test before they are permitted to participate in on-the-water training. Athletes with incomplete forms will not be allowed to participate.
