FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions
Q:Where does the Stone Bridge Rowing Club (SBRC) team practice?
A:The crew team practices on the Potomac River at Algonkian Park in Sterling (47001 Fairway Drive). Most regattas are held at Sandy Run Regional Park on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station (10450 Van Thompson Road). Typically, the entire team travels for at least one regatta during the spring season. Select athletes will travel to the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia. Beaverdam Reservoir in Ashburn is planned to reopen in 2021 with a boathouse and dock. Once open, local high school crew teams plan to practice there.
Q:When is the SBRC rowing season?
A:The season starts with tryouts in late February. The first day on the water is usually the last week of February or the first week of March, weather permitting. It’s a short but intense season, with the first regatta for experienced-only athletes in mid-March, regattas most weekends in April, State competitions in early May, and National competitions in mid-May. Many SBRC athletes choose to participate in a county-wide high school rowing club, Miles Makes Champions (www.mmcrowing.org), in the fall.
Q:What is a regatta?
A:A regatta is a series of boat races for crew teams of various experience levels to include Novice, JV, and Varsity. Some regattas include 2000+ athletes. Races in fall regattas are generally 5000 meters long. High school races in spring regattas are 1500 meters long.
Q:In what type of boats will we be rowing?
A:We row in primarily 8-person and 4-person shells with coxswains. We also have a quad (4-person boat with no coxswain), a double, and a single.
Q:Why would I want to join crew?
A:Crew is an excellent sport that keeps you in great shape, builds team-working skills, and looks great on your college resume. It is the only sport at Stone Bridge High School that allows you to be out on a natural body of water.
Q:How much will SBRC cost if I want to join?
A:We do not receive funding from Loudoun County Public Schools or Stone Bridge High School. The SBRC board of directors sets an annual operating budget with membership fees and fundraising dues required for each athlete. In order to participate in regattas, each athlete must also be a member of US Rowing (www.usrowing.org). There is a small membership fee to join.
Q:Who can I talk to if I want to join?
A:Email the SBRC Coach at stonebridgerowingcoach@gmail.com or SBRC President at stonebridgerowing@stonebridgerowingclub.org.
